September is Self-Improvement Month, and it’s the perfect time to make an intentional shift in perspective.
As leaders, our greatest opportunity for growth often lies not just in new skills we can develop but in our mindset.
For years, I’ve seen business owners get bogged down in the daily grind, dwelling on past mistakes or getting stuck in what’s always been done.
But this way of thinking holds us back and can lead to frustration or even burnout.
Building a new breed of leaders requires a fundamental change in your mindset!
It’s about moving from a fixed perspective to a place where we’re willing to be more vulnerable and ask for help. When we stop trying to do it all ourselves, we challenge the status quo of leadership and empower others to be a part of a bigger future.
Setting Expectations
“No one rises to low expectations.” – Les Brown
I was reminded of this quote recently by my grandson, Christian.
While he was visiting, he came to talk to me while I was working out, and we had an incredible two-hour conversation. At the end, he told me that he loved our talks because they were intellectual!
Soon after, with his big goal of going to West Point in mind, we formalized our talks into a coaching relationship!
But when he started missing a few of our scheduled calls, I knew I had to have a different kind of conversation.
I didn’t scold him or make excuses for him. Instead, I set clear expectations and held him accountable.
I said, “Your new assignment is to get a calendar, find your availability, and send me the options.”
I’ll be honest, I wondered if he would follow through. But a week later, he called me with his calendar ready, having done the work.
You see, he had risen to the expectation!⭐
Trust and integrity are not built by making things easy, but by communicating clear expectations and holding your team accountable.
The Power of Accountability
That moment reinforced a truth I’ve always believed: people need clear expectations set for them in order to rise to them.
True leadership comes from changing your mindset from control to trust!
When you lead with that belief, you empower your team to take ownership and solve problems on their own.
You stop being the firefighter putting out every small fire and start being a proactive leader, focused on strategy.
It creates an environment where your people aren’t just managing tasks anymore, they’re truly leading.
It’s an act of respect that says, “I see your potential, and I believe you can meet it.”
From Mindset to Momentum
A critical part of a growth mindset is developing the future leaders within your organization.
It begins with a fundamental shift in how you, as a business owner, view your team’s potential.
When you embrace this mindset, you stop seeing your people as a fixed resource and start seeing them as individuals with untapped potential.
This perspective allows you to truly develop the leaders who will allow you to get out of the weeds and drive your business forward.
If you’re ready to make that shift and cultivate a team that can transform your organization, it’s time to take action.
